Has this ever happened to you? You find the perfect pair of jeans, the price is right so u grab your size to try on. Only to find they’re way too small. (Occasionally too big, which not surprisingly, rarely bothers us! ha ha)
I recently went back and forth; Do I buy my usual size? It feels pretty good. I’m sure the next size up would be a little more giving but that’s not me. It can’t be. That’s not my size. I don’t want to give myself the permission to be that size.
We have to stop this thought process! I am so guilty of this myself. I’ve learned so much about clothing and sizing over the years, and it comes down to these factors:
A) Every store is different. There is so much discrepancy out there with sizing.
B) There can be differences within each piece of clothing – especially if it’s a cheaper clothing line and the production is not as consistent. You could wear a size 6 in jeans at one store, and an 8 somewhere else. It’s also possible to own pants and tops in three different sizes, all from the SAME brand!
C) Our female bodies are changing all month long. I like to consider that a blessing over a curse! I’d love to have kids one day. I’ll take a little bloat in exchange for the potential of that gift.
D) Often, going up a size will smooth out your whole look. You’ll be more comfortable and your tops will probably look a lot better. (My fav part here = comfort!)
E) The cut/style: You can be a size 4 in a mid-rise jean but have to size up to a 6 for a low rise jean from the same store. There’s less fabric 🙂
When I’m afraid to size up, I try on both sizes. I check with reviews and the store associates and see if they expect any stretch. I often find that if I’m in between a size, sizing up helps me appear more fit, and thinner. It’s not all about looking thin. But comfort and confidence are important. If you’re in between, grab both! Part of the month you may wear the smaller size and part of the month you might feel better in the next size. Express often has BOGO deals on jeans and dress pants.
A really popular pair of leggings I recently purchased runs pretty tight. That’s the point for the brand: the Spanx Faux Leather Leggings. Don’t be afraid to size up one or two sizes in these to be comfortable! I love them, but I bought them more for the look than to suck everything in! They’re a little bit of an investment. Would you rather be grabbing for them because they bring you joy? Or grabbing them because you want to get some use out of them? I tried two sizes and kept the larger size. I’m so glad I did, because I am comfortable and want to wear these every day. *Tip: cut out the tag!
You are gorgeous. Remind yourself every day. Can we just love ourselves as the beauties we are? Tell yourself at least one compliment every time you’re getting ready. “I love my hair today. My legs look fit – my hard work is paying off. I am blessed to have eyes, ears and a nose so I can see, hear and taste the beautiful parts of this day!”
Thank you so much for sharing this journey with me!
